What’s GAMB?

The Georgia Association of Mortgage Brokers (GAMB), a State Affiliate of the National Association of Mortgage Brokers (NAMB), is a nonprofit state trade organization that was formed in 1985 to promote a positive origination and lending environment for mortgage brokers and their customers. GAMB provides education, supports legislative initiatives, encourages high standards of professional ethics and integrity from its members, and promotes these principles throughout the community. When you join GAMB, you become an important part of a nonstop group that exists to support the mortgage industry on both state and national levels. Whether your focus is on fraternizing with others in your profession, having greater access to industry information, establishing a business network, supporting legislation, becoming more educated about your industry, being recognized for achievements, or fighting for a cause to further the interests of your industry, we’re glad that you have joined us in our endeavors.

 What Do GAMB Members Do?

GAMB Members Attend Association Meetings, Seminars and Special Events

At GAMB monthly meetings and seminars, speakers enhance our members’ knowledge of the industry and help prepare members to meet career challenges. Occasionally, GAMB holds special fundraisers, allowing members to lend strength to industry causes. Our Charitable Events Committee provides a means for members to interact with and enrich the community through workdays and other events. All of these activities and many others give our members greater opportunities to meet and network with those who share their profession.

 GAMB Members Serve on Committees

Committee work provides easy exposure to members and opens the door to beneficial relationships a few people at a time. It’s a way for members to pursue their own personal interests while helping GAMB progress along an upward path. Each committee has many jobs that need to be completed, from small to large. A committee member’s participation is limited only by the amount of time he or she is ready to give. A committee sign up sheet that lists GAMB’s current committees, along with a brief description of each committee and its chair, is attached. We hope you’ll join at least one committee and get involved.

 GAMB Members Keep In Touch

Members keep in touch with industry issues through a variety of sources. Information is distributed to members by GAMB and NAMB, and is available on both groups’ web sites, www.GAMB.org and www.NAMB.org. Members receive complimentary monthly issues of GAMB’s newspaper, The Georgia Mortgage Press, and NAMB’s monthly magazine, National Mortgage Broker. Members receive a GAMB Member Roster in Excel Spreadsheet format each year upon joining or renewing, and GAMB will be happy to provide you with an updated roster spreadsheet by e-mail any time at your request.

 GAMB Members Believe that “Right is Might”

By joining GAMB, you align yourself with professionals whose standards are associated with quality. Our members are proud of their adherence to the GAMB Code of Ethics and GAMB Best Business Practices, rules that guide each of our members in their daily business. Members find that consumers are often more secure in doing business with an individual who abides by rules ensuring fairness and honesty. Follow these guidelines, and you’ll position yourself among the best.

  • Inform customer, in writing, of lock-in options;

  • Explain all documents of the loan application;

  • Explain all associated costs of the loan transaction;

  • Charge only those fees disclosed or redisclosed on the Good Faith Estimate;

  • Charge rates and fees that do not vary based on race, color, religion, national origin, gender, marital status, age, receipt of income from public assistance programs, or good faith exercise of rights under consumer finance laws;

  • Communicate with customer throughout the loan process in a timely manner;

  • Provide customer with a written agreement which explains the nature of the relationship and how the member is compensated in the transaction.

 GAMB Members Fight for Their Rights

GAMB’s Legislative Committee and its lobbying team, Joe Tanner & Associates, stay in close contact with state legislators and the Georgia Department of Banking & Finance, as well as with related associations within Georgia’s real estate and mortgage community. This enables GAMB to have a strong voice in state legislation that affects the mortgage industry. On federal issues, GAMB Members are apprised by the Legislative Committees of GAMB and the National Association of Mortgage Brokers. GAMB and NAMB broadcast legislative alerts, calls to action, and links to news stories to the membership, and solicit input from members on various issues. GAMB’s Legislative Committee attends NAMB’s Legislative Conference each year in Washington, D.C., making formal calls on Georgia’s U.S. legislators to increase the awareness of issues that affect our industry. Many GAMB Members also belong to the Georgia Mortgage Brokers Political Action Committee (GMBPAC), a nonprofit organization formed by a group of GAMB Members to raise and disburse funds to support the election of political candidates who have an understanding of the real estate finance and housing industries and who are supportive of the mortgage broker profession. For more details on GMBPAC, Larry Delbridge, at larry@primsouthmortgage.com or 678-841-1100.

 GAMB Members Receive Recognition

GAMB recognizes the achievements and activities of its members in a number of ways. Through the Annual Awards program, the Awards Committee and the membership nominate outstanding individuals for various awards, including Broker, Affiliate, and Volunteer of the Year. After a membership vote, these awards are presented at an Annual Awards Ceremony, along with President’s Awards that are bestowed by GAMB’s current President. Through GAMB’s Top Guns program, companies and individual loan originators are recognized for high production in Atlanta Business Chronicle’s “Home Quarterly” section and “Book of Lists,” and are honored each year at a GAMB event. Companies providing special financial support through the GAMB Industry Partner Program are recognized throughout the year via event materials, announcements, signage, and in The Georgia Mortgage Press, and Industry Partners receive an appreciation gift at GAMB’s Annual Awards Ceremony. Companies sponsoring individual events are recognized through announcements, signage and in The Georgia Mortgage Press. The GAMB Public Relations Committee is always on the lookout for ways in which to promote GAMB and its members. Recently, the PR Committee had a few of GAMB’s officers record public service announcements to be aired on a local radio station to encourage consumers to do business with GAMB Members. GAMB Members and their companies are featured as much as possible on GAMB’s Web Site and in GAMB’s monthly news, The Georgia Mortgage Press, for their accomplishments, activities, and service to the Association, the mortgage industry and the community.

 GAMB Members Get Smart

In addition to seminars and speakers that are coordinated at various events by GAMB’s Programs Committee, the Association promotes industry education offered by the GAMB Education Committee, NAMB, and the GAMB Educational Foundation (GAMBEF). As a NAMB State Partner in Education, GAMB upholds NAMB’s professional certification program and the array of industry courses they offer at various venues throughout the year. Many NAMB courses can now also be taken online. The GAMB Education Committee offers classes approved by the Georgia Department of Banking & Finance for state mortgage broker continuing education requirements. GAMBEF, a sister organization of GAMB and an offshoot of GAMB’s Education Committee, was originally developed and funded by GAMB. Utilizing GAMB’s status as a NAMB State Partner in Education, GAMBEF offers NAMB courses in Georgia, provides classes required by the Department of Banking & Finance to obtain a state mortgage license, and also offers continuing ed. GAMB members receive course discounts from GAMB, NAMB and GAMBEF. For details on GAMB education, contact GAMB Education Chair Maggie Morgan-Reames (404-943-9910 or mreames@topofmind.com). For details on NAMB programs and courses, visit www.NAMB.org  or call 703-342-5900. For GAMBEF class details, contact Frank Torch at 770-751-9820 or ftorch@earthlink.net.

GAMB Members are NAMB Members

GAMB is a State Affiliate of the National Association of Mortgage Brokers. Because NAMB’s rules require an individual to join his or her State Affiliate in order to become a NAMB Member, a Georgia resident must join GAMB in order to join NAMB. Upon joining GAMB, we present you to NAMB for membership approval and pay your NAMB dues. NAMB membership gives you access to vast industry information, a voice in Washington, a complimentary subscription to National Mortgage Broker magazine, discounted rates for NAMB education courses, meetings, affinity programs, and more. Our state is represented at NAMB through the NAMB Delegate Council. GAMB’s current president and vice president serve as NAMB Delegate Council representatives, participating in four to five NAMB Delegate Council meetings each year. Membership in GAMB opens the door for you to become active nationally, and many members take advantage of this. Jan Hix, GAMB’s 1991 President, served as NAMB’s 1997-98 President. Bob Armbruster, GAMB’s 1998 President, was NAMB’s 2004-05 President. A number of our members have joined and/or chaired NAMB committees, and attend NAMB conventions and conferences. Johnny Wade, for example, GAMB’s 1993 President, chaired the NAMB Annual Convention in 1997. For more details on NAMB, visit www.NAMB.org.
