The GAMB Legislative
Committee
By Drexel Beck
The GAMB Legislative Committee is one of the largest
and most active committees within the organization.
Committee members, along with GAMB's lobbying team, Joe
Tanner and Associates, stay in close contact with state
legislators and the Georgia Department of Banking &
Finance, as well as related real estate industry
associations within the Georgia Mortgage Community. This
involvement enables GAMB to have a strong voice in state
legislation that affects the mortgage industry. Members
are apprised on federal issues by GAMB's Legislative
Committee and the National Association of Mortgage Brokers
(NAMB), the national affiliate of GAMB that is located in
the Washington, D.C. area.
The legislative committees
of both groups provide a great deal of information to
GAMB's membership by various means, including: holding
workshops and seminars on legislative issues; presenting
informative materials in monthly printed publications such
as The Georgia Mortgage Press and National
Mortgage Broker Magazine; initiating grass roots
campaigns; and, distributing legislative alerts, calls to
action, and links to news stories on legislative topics of
interest by fax and e-mail broadcast. Both organizations
also solicit input from members on developing issues.
Many of GAMB's members
also belong to the Georgia Mortgage Brokers Political
Action Committee (GMBPAC), a nonprofit organization
originally formed by a group of GAMB Members. GMBPAC's
purpose is to raise and disburse funds to support the
election of political candidates who have an understanding
of the real estate finance and housing industries and who
are supportive of the mortgage broker profession.
